Goldman's Future of Energy Demand

markdougmcd

Goldman released an update to their Future of Energy Demand report which highlights the impact EVs will have on the grid. By 2040, EVs will consume an incremental 9% relative to ex-EV power demand, representing over 4,500 TWh of energy annually. Let's put that scale in context...

Assuming the average U.S. home consumes 11,000 KWh of energy, that represents an additional 400+ million homes of consumption. There are only roughly 140 million U.S. homes today.

Better yet, the largest power facility in the U.S. clocks in at 6.8 GW, the Grand Coulee dam in Washington. You would need an additional 84 Grand Coulee dams to power EVs in 2040 if the dam is operating at a 90% capacity factor.

An incredible amount of energy demand, but still less carbon intensive than burning petrol/diesel fuel.
